Andy McWain

Andy McWain Quartet - Starfish (CD)

"Pianist Andy McWain leads his quartet thru ten pieces that offer an enlightening mix of modern jazz, interspersed with cunning dialogues and excursions into the free zone. Simply stated, the musicians demonstrate a rather uncanny mechanism for blending the best of both worlds into a unique sound and style that hits home in a huge way. Thus, a major and altogether delightful surprise."
-Glenn Astarita, allaboutjazz.com
Boston-born pianist/composer Andy McWain fuses his improvisations with elements from post-bop jazz, contemporary concert music, and modern creative music. McWain has performed, recorded, and/or collaborated with such diverse artists as Tiger Okoshi, Assif Tsahar , John Dirac, Bruce Gertz, Dino Govoni, Jim Robitaille, Royal Hartigan, Albey Balgochian, Hafez Modirzadeh, Hilary Noble, Todd Baker, Dave Zinno, Marcelle Gauvin, Semenya McCord, David Bindman, Bobby Greene, the Artie Shaw Orchestra (led by Dick Johnson ), and the Zen Bastards, among others. His debut CD as a leader, Andy McWain Quartet: STARFISH , has received airplay throughout the U.S., and in Canada and Greece. Cadence Magazine 's Jay Collins called the recording a "convincing debut", and Dan McClenaghan ( allaboutjazz.com ) wrote that "McWain and crew are a phenomenon, a very exciting discovery."
McWain earned his master's degree in composition from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where he studied with modern composer Lee Hyla. He has studied improvisation with Bobby Greene, Anders Bostrom, and Charlie Banacos. McWain has received grants from the American Music Center , the American Composers Forum , and Meet the Composer/New England , and he participated in artist residencies at the Atlantic Center for the Arts (FL), Yaddo Colony (NY), and the Akiyoshidai International Art Village (Japan). His Starfish CD features McWain on acoustic piano, Assif Tsahar on tenor saxophone and bass clarinet, Noah Jarrett on acoustic bass, and Chris Poudrier on drums and percussion.
